1. Interaction and Atmosphere

We are happy to Welcome You to our Online course!

When we talk about the school motivation, we simply mean students’ interest in going to school, learning things and being engaged in the tasks that are given to them. Many studies have shown that the school motivation decreases when students get older. The Finnish longitudinal study “Alkuportaat” is one of the studies that has proved the decrease in motivation during the school years among the students in Finland. It does not have to be that way and teachers can do many things to maintain their students’ interest in school.

“Self-determination theory (SDT)” created by the American psychologists Edward L. Deci and developed together with Richard M. Ryan is one of the first and widely known motivation theories. SDT is based on the idea of peoples’ intrinsic motivation and where people are seen as active subjects. According to SDT there are three essential basic needs for the development and well-being: autonomy, competence and relatedness. Autonomy means that the feeling of freedom brings up intrinsic motivation and students will also be more satisfied. Competence considers peoples’ own experience of their own capabilities and trust in their own skills. Relatedness includes the basic need to be in touch with others.

According to SDT there are three essential basic needs for the development and well-being: autonomy, competence and relatedness.

In this course we will focus more on competence and relatedness.

We will start our journey by considering the importance of interaction and atmosphere in the classroom. Every student has the emotional need to be a part of the group and feel accepted. If you want to fulfill these emotional needs, you have to focus on the interaction between you and your students. As we know, teaching demands a large amount of personal interaction between the teacher and the audience. It is not easy and that can be the most wearing part of the teacher’s work but also the best part. It is rewarding when you see motivated students enjoying their schoolwork.

Every student has the emotional need to be a part of the group and feel accepted.

You can keep in mind the five unsaid wishes of your students when you are interacting with them.

For my teacher

I hope you notice me, see me and hear me today.

I hope I am important to you.

I hope you have trust in me.

I hope you remember that my personal life effects my concentration sometimes.

I hope you believe in me, although I may have failed occasionally, and keep helping me to succeed.

Task 1

  • Remember the way you usually start your lessons in the classroom and then compare it with the things you saw and heard in the film.
  • Collect and write down some of the new ideas you could try in the beginning of your next lesson.
