2. Sensing Students’ Emotional Needs

2. Sensing Students’ Emotional Needs

The positive psychology gives you a good approach to what you should do in your classroom. Positive teacher-student interaction starts from trust between teacher and their students. That is the only way to reach a shared acceptance and get respect from students.  When a teacher meets a new group of students, it is crucial to build strong relationships with them. The teacher should show interest in the emotional and academic needs of the students. It is also important that students are seen as unique and accepted individuals. The positive learning atmosphere improves students’ self-esteem and enhance their skills. It also makes them feel autonomy and independence when it comes to their own learning. It is important that teachers give supportive and encouraging feedback to students daily. This emotional support is key to everything, it refers to the ways teachers help students develop warm relationships, experience enjoyment about learning and feel themselves comfortable in the classroom.

Positive teacher-student interaction starts from trust between teacher and their students.

When sensing your student’s emotional needs and finding out that they need an encouragement, you can use for example the following sentences.

“I noticed you have tried hard today.

“I am so proud that you chose to work/ listen to/ participate today.”

“I was proud of you because you did not give up.

“I think you improved your working today.

I admired the way you took ownership of that task.

I loved to see you having positive attitude today.

I know/ noticed you did your best today.

“I saw you helping others.

Task 2

Children want to have your attention. These days many parents are busy and children want to be seen. Think about the interaction between you and your students:

  • Could You increase the elements of emotional support in Your class?
  • What kind of students would this help the most?
  • Could it make Your work easier?
