Take Aways

SummarYou have now studied the basic elements that all play a part in students’ motivation. All of these elements will also have a great influence on students’ well-being when done successfully.  In the following we summarize the main points of the course:

Within this course we have delt with two of three topics of SDT. The third topic, autonomy, is a bit more complex question though. We will handle that on our upcoming course about positive pedagogy and its usage in subject teaching. It is time to remind our selves, what we know about motivating so far:

Every student has the emotional need to be a part of the group and feel accepted. If you want to fulfill these emotional needs you have to focus on the interaction between you and your students.

It is important to create a positive atmosphere in the classroom. Positive teacher-student interaction starts from trust between teacher and their students.

At the beginning of the lesson it’s important to wake up students curiosity and interest with visual materials like pictures or videos.

It can be very useful to help students to activate their prior knowledge. By doing that the teacher will help students to feel more competent about their abilities.

Sometimes students need external rewards in order to concentrate and push themselves forward . Rewarding can be very effective when used in a right way.

People have an inner need to create and maintain positive and meaningful social relationships. There are many different exercises you can try out to get your students know each other better and create a good team spirit.
