Differentiation Methods

As you may have noticed, in this course and also in other MOTI Education’s courses, it is important to put effort into good planning. That is crucial for good results. The teacher must match teaching to the needs of each learner. It is an ideal way to help all the students to learn. Two of the same subject lessons can vary a lot if the teacher considers the students’ skills and needs before the lessons. Working methods should be chosen so that everyone learns new skills and knowledge. One of the most used ways of supporting students in Finnish classrooms is to use differentiation. It simply means that teachers are tailoring tasks, instructions, learning environments or assessments to meet the students’ individual needs.  It is possible to differentiate in many ways. In this lesson you will learn the most commonly used ways to differentiate in your classroom. Our examples are chosen so that it is easy for you to copy the ideas into your work.

Task 1

Take one of the learning tasks that you use regularly. Moderate that task so that you make it easier for the following types of students:

How could you differentiate in your lessons?

  • Slow readers.
  • Students who have problems learning new terms.
  • Students who are slow processors.

Are you interested in hearing more about differentiation as a method? Tell that in your feedback. We are planning a short course on this in the future where we could give you tips to create high class material for your students.
